What is an ITIN (IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)

An ITIN is a nine digit number issued by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to individuals who are required for U.S. federal tax purposes to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but are NOT eligible to get a U.S. Social Security number (SSN).

Who can get an ITIN

Any person not eligible for a U.S, Social Security Number (SSN).

Does Immigratin Status restrict an ITIN

NO, both resident and nonresident aliens may be issued an ITIN.

If one may have US federal tax return responsibiliy then an ITIN is required.

Reasons for an ITIN

Individuals with business activities related to the US. (Note, an ITIN does not grant the privledge to work in the US) Dependents of an individual filing a US Income tax return.   Spouse   Children   Parents Individuals receiving US taxable income such as Inheritances, Pensions, Annuities, Interest, Dividends, Royalties. Individuals obtaining US Mortgages Foreign Individuals investing in the US Individuals subject to US backup withholding Non-resident alien required to get an ITIN to claim a Tax Treaty Benefit Non US individuals who are partners in a U.S. Partnership

What is a Certifying Acceptance Agent (CAA)

A Certified Acceptance Agent is a person or an entity (business or organization) who, pursuant to a written agreement with the IRS, is authorized to assist individuals and other foreign persons who do not qualify for a Social Security Number but who still need a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). A Certifed Acceptance Agent can certify original identy documents so that original documents do need to be sent to the IRS in most cases. The CAA issues a Certificate of Accuracy (COA) for the submitted documents. Note, an Acceptance Agent (AA) cannot issue a Certificate of Accuracy - original documents must still be submited to the IRS.

We are located in Troy Michighan and have clients most states and many countries internationaly.  While we are required to conduct an in person interview with each applicant, the IRS does allow the use of video conferencing for the interview. We use Skype and other services for this purpose. Regardless of where you are we can help.
